FiveOuncesofPain.com is reporting that Canadian promotion XMMA is announcing that Cris “Cyborg” Santos has injured her shoulder training and will not be able to fight at XMMA 7, which takes place February 27.
XMMA has announced that EliteXC veteran Cris “Cyborg” Santos has suffered a shoulder injury and has been forced to withdraw from her bout with Marloes Coenen at XMMA 7: Inferno.
It’s unclear from the announcement what the exact nature or severity of Santos’ shoulder injury is and how long she will be out of action or when she will be able to return to training and fighting.
Of course, the bout with Coenen was only to be an appetizer of sorts for MMA fans, who this week found out that Strikeforce was in the process of trying to set up a Cyborg-Gina Carano bout for the promotion’s April 5 Showtime debut.
The Cyborg-Carano matchup is one that fans have been clamoring for ever since Santos made a dramatic entrance onto the national scene with a TKO victory over Shayna Baszler at EliteXC “Unfinished Business” on CBS in July, 2008.
This injury only adds to the uncertainty of whether that fight can be pulled off with just about a month and a half to go. As it was, the timing would have been very close and Carano hasn’t been signed by Strikeforce yet.
It certainly hasn’t been a good weekend for the debut Strikeforce card. It has also been reported that former EliteXC lightweight champ KJ Noons will not fight Strikeforce champ Josh Thomson as previously hoped.
